Aspectual influences on early tense comprehension.

چکیده

This study investigated the aspect first hypothesis which claims that children initially use verbal morphology to mark aspect and not tense. Experiment 1 tested 46 two- and three-year-old children's comprehension of tense as it is marked in the auxiliary system using a sentence-to-scene matching task. Children were presented with multiple performances of the same event and asked where a character is V'ing, was V'ing and is gonna V. Results showed that even the two-year-old children could successfully understand tense in this experiment. Experiment 2 changed the information available in the scenes by varying whether or not the past-time event reached its completion point. Thirty-six two-, three- and four-year-old children participated. The results showed that the two-year-olds could only successfully understand past and present auxiliaries when past-time information in the scenes was coextensive with completion information in the scenes. This result suggests that these children may be making a grammatical aspect (perfective/imperfective) judgment and not a tense (past/present) judgment, or at least, that grammatical aspect influences tense interpretation for these children.

Acquisition of Aspectual Meanings in a Language with and a Language without Morphological Aspect

This comprehension study on aspectual form-to-meaning correspondences set out to see if the presence of aspect as morphological category in a language makes the acquisition of aspectual form-meaning pairs relatively easy in comparison to a language that lacks such an aspect category. In Polish, aspect is a grammatical category—all verbs are marked as perfective or imperfective—and tense is mark...

The Role of Caregivers’ Tense and Aspectual Distinctions on Children’s Later Acquisition

Grammaticalized expressions of time are found across languages. In particular, temporal information can be conveyed through tense morphology, which indicates an event’s location of time based on a referent event (Comrie, 1985) and through aspect morphology, which indicates “ways of viewing the internal temporal constituency of a situation” (e.g., is an event ongoing or completed; Comrie, 1976, ...

Optimal and Non-Optimal Interpretations in the Acquisition of Dutch Past Tenses

An aspectual comprehension experiment with Dutch learners reveals an asymmetry in their understanding of the Present Perfect on the one hand versus the Imperfective Past and Periphrastic Past Progressive on the other. Dutch 2 and 3-year-olds have acquired the completion entailment of the Perfect, but do not properly restrict their interpretation of the Imperfective Past and Periphrastic Past Pr...

Tense, aspect and coercion in a cross-linguistic perspective

Aspectual operators like the progressive in English change the aspectual nature of the eventuality. The meaning shift is grammaticalized by means of a morphological marker or a syntactic construction. But sometimes aspectual shift is hidden. These are cases where an eventuality description is coerced in order to repair the mismatch between the aspectual nature of the eventuality and the aspectu...

Aspectual Entities and Tense in Discourse

Linguistic expressions form interesting patterns in discourse. In the domain of temporality, the morphemes of tense and aspectual viewpoint pattern significantly within a discourse. Shifts of viewpoint and tense are often associated with shifts of direction, and with the distinction between foreground and background. One important reason for this effect is that aspectual viewpoint and tense for...
